I really loved that Stefan heard Damon and Elena’s conversation after the sire bond is broken(not because I want the guy to suffer but) because he hears Damon laying it out to Elena that he’s selfish and he’s wrong for her in every way and not being apologetic about it…
This also makes for a great comparison to her relationship with Stefan as well. Everything about them was based on lies and secrets. In season 3, all throughout the season Elena was adamant that that wasn’t who Stefan “really was”, even after she saw his murder wall and experienced his worst side when he threatened to murder her over Wickery Bridge, and she insisted that she “knew him better than anyone”. She just figured that if she could ignore the shit he has done, get him back on the AB diet and back to the sweet guy that she met in season 1, then everything will be okay. And she thought that was what happened in 3x20. That Stefan was back to this makeshift version of himself that she used to date, and that’s probably another reason why she chose him… but in season 4 after she became a vampire and became sired to Damon, she began to see Stefan’s faults for what they really were. Stefan hit the nail on the head when he told Elena that she didn’t know what he looked like when he was not in love with her.
I love this because Elena has no illusions about Damon. She’s seen what he was like when he wasn’t in love with her, she’s seen how much he has changed and she fell in love with him- the good, the bad, the ugly and the downright terrifying.
